Most charities have a safeguarding policy. The harder part is what happens when a situation is moving quickly, people are under pressure and nobody is sure who needs to know, what should be recorded or when trustees should step in.
In my guest blog for VONNE, the North East’s voluntary sector network, I look at that gap between what is written down and what happens in practice. Strong arrangements tend to show in practical ways. There is a safeguarding lead who understands the role, an escalation route staff feel confident using, and records clear enough that someone else could follow what was decided and why. I also describe how LEGO Serious Play helps trustees and teams say what they think, in a way an ordinary meeting often does not.
Clarity about roles, escalation and recording is what lets an organisation handle difficulty when it arrives.
